“I NEED MORE UPPER CABINETS” If you tell me you need more upper cabinets, I first want to know what you’re trying to store. Because “I need more storage” can mean a hundred different things. Maybe your small appliances are taking over all of your kitchen counter space. Maybe serving pieces and hosting dishes are mixed in with everyday dishes. Maybe you buy pantry staples in bulk and don’t have enough room to put everything away on grocery day. Maybe you have fifteen water bottles fighting for the same shelf that only stay put when a specific number are put away. Once we understand what needs a home, the solution might be more upper cabinets.

One of the most important parts of my job is getting to know you and your daily routines. Understanding which questions to ask to ensure I’m getting the information I need to fully design a space that will feel like home to you. You tell me you need more storage. I want to know what doesn’t have a home right now. You tell me you want an open floor plan. I want to know what you feel disconnected from. When you’ve lived in a home for years, you become incredibly good at adapting to it. The workarounds eventually become habits and the habits start to feel like requirements. A renovation gives us an opportunity to start questioning these habits.

"We need a desk in the kitchen" If you tell me you need a desk in the kitchen, one of the first things I’m going to ask is whether you actually sit at your current one. Because sometimes a kitchen desk isn’t really a desk at all. It’s where the mail lands. It’s where school papers accumulate. It’s where you charge your phone. Keep the calendar. Find a pen. Put something you need to remember to take out the door tomorrow. If this is how your family actually uses it, recreating a traditional desk may just recreate the clutter and overwhelm you already feel.
